Touring The Vatican City and discover the Mosaics art
Not many visitors to Vatican City know about the Vatican Mosaic Studio, which is home in the ancient hospice of Santa Marta. This unique workshop is the place that all the Vatican mosaics are created as well as the restoration of the many famous mosaics throughout Vatican City.
Since 1847, the mosaics found in the Basilica of Saint Paulís Outside the Walls were created by the artisans that work diligently to create these amazing masterpieces. A few of the marvels that have been designed and created in the Vatican Mosaic Studio include the Chronological Series of the Supreme Pontiffs that are home in the Basilica of Saint Paulís Outside the Walls and Sunflowers of Vincent Van Gogh.
The entire studio is full of the tools needed to create the mosaics including a room that looks similar to an old pharmacy full of several wooden drawers that is the location of the color store. Every drawer in the room has a special number that corresponds to a specific glaze color with 2600 colors total.
While you visit the Vatican Mosaic Studio you will be able to enjoy, a few of the wonders created here by visiting the small art gallery that is home next to the workshop. A few of the marvels home here include the reproductions of the Madonna of Perpetual Succor, Madonna of Guadalupe, and the Mother of Good Counsel. The magnificent reproductions also include copies of masterpieces of such famous artists as Roualt, Chagall, and Monet.
The uniqueness found with Vatican mosaics is one that has been passed down from generation to generation from the older members teaching the secrets of the art to the younger artists. The studio not only creates the beautiful reproductions of famous artwork, but also has the function of restoring any of the mosaics in Vatican City including Saint Peters dome.
Throughout history, the Pope during various trips to other countries has offered as a gift a mosaic created in the Vatican Mosaic Studio. Some of the breath taking mosaics giving as gifts include the famous table in mosaic with the representation of Achillesí shield given to Charles X King of France in 1826 by Pope Leo XII and John Paul II when he visited Cuba, gave Fidel Castro a gift of the reproduction of the Christ of the Niche of the Pallia in the Vatican Grottos.
